The main route leaves Bolzano through the Eisack Valley, then turns at Ponte Gardena and climbs into Val Gardena via Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva. If you only want one proper stop, make it Chiusa or Ortisei. If you are chasing views and clear weather, continue beyond Selva to Passo Gardena.
Routing logic: This is not a “collect every village” drive. Use Chiusa for charm, Ortisei for a useful walking stop, and Passo Gardena only when you have the weather window for it.
0 min detour
Worth it if you are leaving after breakfast and want one easy city stop before the valley roads begin.
10-15 min detour
The most rewarding short stop on this route: medieval streets, quick cafes, and an easy walk that does not derail your timing.
5-10 min detour
Useful as a short reset point before you start climbing into Val Gardena proper.
20-40 min stop
The best full stop for coffee, lunch, or a pedestrian-center walk. If you only stop once in the valley, make it here.
10-20 min stop
Good for a quick photo stretch when you want scenery without committing to a much longer mountain pass detour.
15-30 min stop
Best if you are staying in the upper valley or want to decide last-minute whether the weather justifies continuing higher.
30-45 min beyond Selva
The optional high point of the route. Go only if visibility is good and you have enough time to enjoy it instead of rushing back down.
