Overview

Zurich to Interlaken is about 1 hr 45 min of driving without stops. The fastest sensible line is A3/A4 out of Zurich to Zug, A14 to Lucerne, A2 to the Lopper junction, then the A8 through Sarnen and Giswil and over the Brünig Pass (1,008 m) down to Brienz and along Lake Brienz into Interlaken. Below: what the drive actually costs you in tolls and time, where it is worth stopping, and what to know before you set off.

Before you go: This route is not motorway all the way: past Giswil the A8 drops to an ordinary two-lane road and climbs the Brünig Pass (1,008 m) before descending to Brienz. It is open year-round but is the reason 120 km still takes close to two hours, and it is the stretch that backs up on summer weekends. The all-motorway alternative via Bern (A1/A6/A8) is about 180 km.
