Route Overview: Munich Airport to Innsbruck
The drive from Munich Airport to Innsbruck covers approximately 190 km (118 miles) and takes about 2 hours. Head south from the airport on the A92 to the A9, then southwest on the A8 toward Rosenheim. At Rosenheim, take the A93 south toward Kufstein and the Austrian border, where it becomes the A12 (Inntal motorway) leading directly to Innsbruck.
German Autobahns have no toll, but you will need an Austrian motorway vignette (Vignette) once you continue past the Kufstein-Süd exemption onto the A12 toward Innsbruck. The 10-day digital vignette costs EUR 12.80 for cars in 2026 and can be purchased online at asfinag.at before your trip. You can also buy a physical sticker at petrol stations near the border, but the digital version is more convenient.
The standard airport route to Innsbruck does not use the A13 Brenner section toll road. You only need the A13 Brenner section toll if you continue south from Innsbruck toward the Italian border; ASFINAG lists the 2026 A13 single route ticket at EUR 12.50. Some GPS systems may still suggest Mittenwald or other non-motorway alternatives if you choose to avoid Austrian motorway-vignette sections.
- A8 from Munich, A93 south to Austrian border, A12 to Innsbruck
- Austrian digital vignette (10-day car vignette: EUR 12.80) needed once continuing past Kufstein-Süd onto the A12
- A13 Brenner section toll applies only if continuing south toward Italy

Stops and Timing Along the Way
The most scenic part of this drive is the approach through the Inn Valley after crossing into Austria. The mountains close in on both sides, and on a clear day, the views are spectacular. Kufstein, just across the border, has a medieval fortress and a compact old town — it makes a pleasant 20-minute stop if you want to stretch your legs after the motorway drive.
Traffic on the A8 between Munich and Rosenheim can be heavy during rush hours and holiday departures. The A93 toward the Austrian border also sees increased traffic on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings as German tourists head to Tyrolean ski resorts. If possible, avoid departing Munich Airport between 15:00–18:00 on Fridays.
In winter, the A93 and A12 through the Inn Valley are well-maintained and ploughed, but winter tyres are mandatory in Austria from November 1 to April 15. Verify with your rental company that winter tyres are fitted.
- Kufstein: just across the Austrian border, medieval fortress and cafes
- Avoid Friday afternoon departures from Munich for lighter traffic
- Winter tyres mandatory in Austria Nov 1 – Apr 15

Arrival Tips for Innsbruck
Parking in Innsbruck's old town is limited but well-organized. The City Garage (Parkgarage Altstadt) beneath the Marktplatz is the most central option, though it fills quickly in summer. Congress Garage and Kaufhaus Tyrol Garage are alternatives within a 5-minute walk of the old town. Rates typically range from EUR 15–25 per day.
If you are staying in Igls (a hillside suburb 15 minutes above Innsbruck) or Hall in Tirol (10 minutes east), parking is much easier and often free with accommodation. Both locations offer bus connections into Innsbruck centre.
For US and UK visitors: Austria drives on the right. Innsbruck has an efficient tram system, so once you park, you may not need the car again until leaving the city. Speed limits in the city are 50 km/h (30 mph) with 30 km/h (19 mph) zones in the old town and residential areas.
