Route Overview: Zurich Airport to Tasch (for Zermatt)
Zermatt is a car-free village, so your driving destination is actually Tasch, located 5 km before Zermatt at the end of the Matter Valley. The drive from Zurich Airport to Tasch covers approximately 270 km (168 miles) and takes about 3.5 hours. Head west on the A1 toward Bern, then south on the A6 and A9 through the Rhone Valley to Visp, and finally up the Matter Valley to Tasch.
The route is almost entirely motorway until Visp, after which you follow a well-maintained cantonal road up the valley. The final 30 km from Visp to Tasch is a two-lane road that winds through several small villages — it is scenic but can be slow behind lorries or campervans.
A Swiss motorway vignette is required. You will also pass through the Lotschberg tunnel approach area — there is no additional toll for the road route via the Rhone Valley, but if you choose the car train through the Lotschberg tunnel (as a shortcut from Kandersteg to the Valais), that incurs a separate fee of approximately CHF 30.
- Drive to Tasch, not Zermatt — Zermatt is completely car-free
- Route: A1 west to Bern, A6/A9 south through Rhone Valley, then Matter Valley
- Final 30 km from Visp is a scenic two-lane road through alpine villages

Stops and Timing Along the Way
At 3.5 hours, this is one of the longer airport-to-resort drives in Switzerland, so a stop is recommended. Bern is roughly 90 minutes from the airport and makes a logical break — the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and there are parking garages near the station. Even a 20-minute walk along the Aare river is refreshing after a flight.
After Bern, the A6 passes Thun and its castle-topped lakefront before entering the Rhone Valley. The stretch from Spiez to Visp via the A9 runs through the Valais wine region, one of Switzerland's sunniest areas. If you have time, a stop at one of the roadside viewpoints above the valley is worthwhile.
Plan your arrival in Tasch before the last convenient shuttle trains to Zermatt. Trains run frequently (every 20 minutes during peak hours) from early morning until late evening, but the last departure is typically around 23:00. Check the current Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn timetable before you travel.
- Bern: 90 min from airport, UNESCO old town, good for a leg stretch
- Rhone Valley: sunny vineyards and panoramic viewpoints
- Last Tasch-Zermatt train around 23:00 — plan accordingly

Arrival Tips: Tasch Parking and Zermatt Shuttle
Tasch has several parking garages ranging from open-air lots (CHF 15/day) to covered, heated garages (CHF 18–22/day). The Matterhorn Terminal Tasch garage is the most convenient, located directly next to the train station. Book ahead during peak ski season (Christmas, February half-term) and summer school holidays, as garages can fill up.
The shuttle train from Tasch to Zermatt takes 12 minutes and costs approximately CHF 8.40 one way (CHF 16.80 return). You can buy tickets at the Tasch station or use the SBB app. Bring only what you can carry comfortably — there are no luggage trolleys on the platform in Zermatt, though some hotels offer porter services.
For UK visitors accustomed to left-hand driving: the A1 and A9 motorways are wide, modern, and well-signed, so the right-hand driving adjustment is manageable. The narrow Matter Valley road is where you need extra care, especially when passing oncoming vehicles on tight bends.
