Why this route works for a first family visit
This is a warm-season sightseeing plan, not a ski itinerary or a high-altitude hiking challenge. Lucerne gives you a city-based start; Lauterbrunnen brings the mountain setting without changing accommodation every night. We recommend it for families happier with a train ride, a village and time outdoors than a list of summit tickets.
For toddlers or a first trip with a pushchair, reduce each day further and choose accommodation with uncomplicated access. The car-free bases guide compares alternatives if your family's priorities differ.
Seven days, with a calm job for each day
| Day | Main plan | Sleep |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Travel to Lucerne, check in and take a short lakeside or old-town walk. Buy snacks and breakfast supplies if needed. | Lucerne, night 1 |
| 2 | Spend the main part of the day at the Swiss Museum of Transport. Choose the exhibitions your children enjoy and leave time for a quiet afternoon. | Lucerne, night 2 |
| 3 | A relaxed lakefront and city day, with a short scheduled boat outing only if the weather, timetable and your family's energy suit it. | Lucerne, night 3 |
| 4 | Take the Luzern–Interlaken Express to Interlaken Ost, then the regional train to Lauterbrunnen. Check in and stop there; the journey is today's main activity. | Lauterbrunnen, night 4 |
| 5 | Make a short valley outing near Lauterbrunnen. Ask locally for an open, suitable route, turn back before everyone is tired and keep the afternoon free. | Lauterbrunnen, night 5 |
| 6 | Take the train to Wengen for a village visit if services and weather suit. Keep any further ascent optional and return well before the final connection. | Lauterbrunnen, night 6 |
| 7 | Return by rail to the airport or onward city. Check the full journey before choosing your flight. | No overnight included |
The museum is an especially useful rain option: swap days 2 and 3 as needed. Its official page lists opening times; check separate attraction tickets and programmes before promising a particular show. You do not need a summit excursion to make this a successful Alps holiday.
The important train day is Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen
Search Luzern → Lauterbrunnen in SBB and inspect the connection via Interlaken Ost. The Luzern–Interlaken Express connects the two towns and accepts ordinary rail tickets; its operator also offers seat reservations. Check ticket and reservation arrangements separately if sitting together matters to your family.
At Interlaken Ost, confirm that the train or indicated section is for Lauterbrunnen. The Jungfrau station guide confirms the regional connections and onward rail access to Wengen. Do not simply board for Grindelwald because the train looks like the one in a photograph.
Build the day's rhythm around breakfast, a packed lunch and check-in. Avoid a tight lunch reservation or prepaid excursion after the transfer. Keep spare clothing, nappies where needed, water and one small activity in the bag you can reach without opening the main suitcase.
Book rooms that reduce the work between outings
In Lucerne, prioritise a manageable route from the railway station, space for the actual number of guests and straightforward evening meals. In Lauterbrunnen, station proximity is useful, but ask about road noise, stairs, the walk with luggage and whether a pushchair can be stored safely.
Compare Lucerne neighbourhoods and Lauterbrunnen accommodation areas. The existing guides also discuss driving; for this itinerary focus on room layout and walking access. A family room label does not tell you whether there are proper beds, a cot charge or a separate sleeping area. Confirm those details, laundry access and cancellation terms with the property.
Price the family, not just two adult passes
Enter every child's age when comparing tickets. The Swiss Family Card covers eligible children aged 6 to under 16 travelling with a parent who holds a qualifying Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex or Swiss Half Fare Card plus the required ticket. This tourist product is for visitors resident outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Add eligible children when purchasing, and check the current validity map and each mountain service’s coverage. Do not assume a child discount or a pass benefit applies to every activity.
Compare the whole itinerary as a family: arrival, Lucerne–Lauterbrunnen transfer, departure and your likely local outings. A museum-heavy day or a quiet valley day may involve little paid transport. Read SBB's family travel guidance for luggage and pushchair planning, and choose connections your adults can manage while also supervising the children.
Rain, tired children and seasonal limits
In Lucerne, swap the lake day for the museum, shorten the walk or spend more time at your accommodation. In Lauterbrunnen, choose a short village outing between showers, indoor downtime or an easy rail outing only if that still feels enjoyable. Do not replace every wet day with a costly ascent into cloud.
Before Wengen or any optional mountain excursion, consult current operating information. A summer description does not establish winter walking conditions, pushchair suitability or shoulder-season lift availability. Keep the default day at village level unless the group, route and forecast suit more.
- Confirm family-room occupancy, beds and access before paying.
- Check arrival and departure against actual flight times.
- Compare family ticket totals for the outings you expect to take.
- Keep day 4 free of timed attractions.
- Save one simple indoor fallback and allow children to shorten any day.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Alps train itinerary suitable for toddlers?
It can be adapted by keeping outings short, choosing accommodation with easy access and carrying only luggage the adults can manage. Confirm pushchair access for each property and transport connection.
Does the trip include seven hotel nights?
No. It includes seven days and six nights: three in Lucerne and three in Lauterbrunnen. Day 7 is departure.
Do we need to book a summit excursion?
No. The core plan uses city, lakefront, valley and village outings. Add a mountain excursion only when the weather, operating status, cost and children's interests justify it.
Can we use this itinerary in winter?
The hotel pattern can be reused, but the outdoor plan needs rewriting around winter conditions and operating services. It is a warm-season sightseeing itinerary, not a winter walking or skiing plan.
