Choose this for variety; choose one base for maximum ski time
This itinerary trades a day of skiing for a second resort. If your priority is six consecutive lesson days, a single hotel or very light logistics with young children, spend the week in one resort instead. First-time skiers should discuss the split with their ski school before booking: restarting lessons and fitting equipment twice adds work.
Use the plan only when both resorts have suitable winter operations for your dates. The Jungfrau operator makes opening dependent on snow and weather; Zermatt also needs a live lift and piste check. A train timetable proves you can reach a village, not that your intended ski terrain is open.
The seven-day plan: every night accounted for
| Day | Plan | Sleep |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Travel from Zurich Airport or your Swiss entry station to Grindelwald. Check in, collect rental equipment if time allows and locate tomorrow's meeting point. | Grindelwald, night 1 |
| 2 | Ski or take lessons in the Grindelwald–Wengen area on terrain appropriate to your group. Keep the afternoon flexible if travel tiredness catches up. | Grindelwald, night 2 |
| 3 | A second ski day: repeat a comfortable sector or try another open area covered by your pass. Return rental equipment before the shop closes. | Grindelwald, night 3 |
| 4 | Breakfast, checkout and rail transfer to Zermatt. Allow the day for changes, lunch, check-in and a second equipment fitting. | Zermatt, night 4 |
| 5 | First Zermatt ski day. Let your ability, lesson meeting point and the operating report determine the lift sector. | Zermatt, night 5 |
| 6 | Second Zermatt ski day or weather replacement. Finish with enough time to return equipment and pack. | Zermatt, night 6 |
| 7 | Rail departure to your onward city or airport. No skiing is scheduled before the flight. | No overnight included |
Days 2 and 3, and days 5 and 6, can swap activities within each stay. This gives you a little weather flexibility, but not enough to guarantee four ski days. Adding nights is the practical way to gain a proper weather reserve.
Book three travel days, with the correct station names
Arrival: search your entry station to Grindelwald in SBB. The regional approach runs through Interlaken Ost. Grindelwald village station and Grindelwald Terminal are different stops: choose according to your hotel, not whichever name appears first. The official station guide explains the distinction.
Day 4: search Grindelwald → Zermatt as one journey. A usual connection runs back through Interlaken Ost and Spiez, onward to Visp, then up to Zermatt. Treat this as a full transfer day even if the displayed rail time looks manageable. Use the date-specific result for changes and any replacement transport; the BLS network information helps orient the Interlaken–Spiez leg.
Departure: search Zermatt to your actual airport station. Read our Zurich–Zermatt train guide for luggage and flight planning. An early flight may require moving the final night to Zurich; that replaces night 6 here and shortens the final resort day.
Choose accommodation around the morning you will repeat
In Grindelwald, compare village convenience with access to Grindelwald Terminal. For booked lessons, ask the school for the precise meeting point before selecting a room. A mountain-view balcony is less useful if every morning begins with an awkward uphill equipment carry.
In Zermatt, compare the station area against your chosen ski access. Ask about equipment storage, drying facilities, breakfast time and luggage pickup. Use the area comparisons in where to stay in Grindelwald and where to stay in Zermatt, then check actual walking routes with the property.
Keep train tickets, ski passes and equipment separate
Make three columns in your budget: transport between bases, resort skiing and equipment or lessons. Compare point-to-point tickets and eligible rail passes for the arrival, transfer and departure days. A Swiss Travel Pass is not a substitute for checking the resort ski-pass product.
Before buying, check whether a resort pass already covers a local railway you plan to use, and on which dates. Do not assume Grindelwald and Zermatt share a ski ticket. For this short split, separate rentals in each resort remove skis from the inter-resort transfer, but may cost more or mean two fittings. Compare the full cost and return deadlines. Carry your own boots only if the comfort advantage justifies the weight.
Weather alternatives and the booking order
On a stormy day, consult staff and operating reports before leaving town. Replace skiing with a slow village day, a booked indoor activity or a hotel pool only where access is confirmed. A mountain railway sightseeing ride is an option only if operating and worthwhile in the visibility; it is not an automatic storm fallback. Check Jungfrau operation separately from the rail journey bringing you to the resort.
- Confirm winter operations and lesson availability for both stays.
- Check all three rail days and the final flight margin.
- Book rooms with suitable access and cancellation terms.
- Reserve lessons and equipment, then compare ski-pass coverage.
- Choose rail tickets according to flexibility needs and recheck travel before departure.
Choose the right place to stay

Grindelwald · nights 1–3
The existing guide also discusses driving. For this trip use its area comparison and confirm the station or ski-school walk, equipment storage and cancellation terms.
Zermatt · nights 4–6
Check the property's actual route to your chosen lift or lesson meeting point and whether station luggage pickup is available.

Frequently asked questions
How many ski days does this seven-day trip include?
Four planned ski days: two in Grindelwald and two in Zermatt. Arrival, the change of base and departure use the other three days. Weather and operating conditions can reduce the skiing.
Is a two-resort train trip suitable for complete beginners?
It can work, but one base is usually simpler for a continuous lesson programme. Confirm lesson times, meeting points and equipment arrangements before splitting the week.
Can I take an early flight home on day 7?
Check the exact Zermatt-to-airport journey against your airline's arrival advice. If the margin is poor, replace the final Zermatt night with an airport-area overnight and shorten day 6.
Should I rent skis in each resort?
Separate rentals reduce luggage on day 4 but mean two fittings and potentially a different total price. Compare that against carrying your own skis and arranging storage.
