Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a vignette to drive in Austria?

Yes. All Austrian motorways and expressways require a vignette. A 10-day digital vignette costs EUR 9.90 and can be purchased online before travel. Without one, you risk an on-the-spot fine of EUR 120 or more. Certain alpine toll roads like the Grossglockner have separate entry fees on top of the vignette.

Is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road worth the drive?

Absolutely. The Grossglockner is Austria's most spectacular mountain road, climbing to 2,504 metres with views of the Pasterze Glacier and over 30 peaks above 3,000 metres. The toll is around EUR 42 per car (2026). Allow a full day with stops. The road is open from late May to late October, weather permitting.

How many days should I spend in Innsbruck?

Two to three nights is ideal. That gives you a full day for the Old Town and Nordkette cable car, plus a day trip to the Stubai Valley or a scenic drive toward the Brenner Pass. Innsbruck also works as a base for day trips into Bavaria (Garmisch is 90 minutes away) or the start of a Dolomites transfer.

What are the key driving rules in Austria?

Speed limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on rural roads, and 50 km/h in towns. Winter tyres are mandatory from November 1 to April 15 when conditions require them. Headlights must be on during the day. Blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. Radar and section-speed cameras are common throughout the motorway network.
