Which airport should you compare first?
The shortlist below is an editorial starting point. It combines the Val Gardena airport guide, Alta Badia arrival information and Cortina Express routes. It does not assume a daily shuttle or a particular flight operates on your dates.
| Your ski base | Start the comparison with | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Ortisei, Santa Cristina or Selva | Bolzano, Verona and Innsbruck; add Munich or Venice when flights justify them. | The complete transfer to your accommodation, the return departure and any Brenner delays on northern road approaches. |
| Corvara, Colfosco or other Alta Badia villages | Bolzano, Innsbruck, Verona and Venice; compare the transfer for the named village. | A confirmed airport shuttle or private transfer, or the rail-and-bus journey via Brunico. |
| Cortina d'Ampezzo | Venice Marco Polo first; compare Treviso when its full connection fits better. | The dated coach service, luggage rules, late-flight fallback and distance from the Cortina stop to your hotel. |
Val Gardena: compare the southern and northern approaches
Bolzano is the closest listed airport in the official Val Gardena comparison. It belongs on your shortlist when its flight schedule and fare work from your origin. Verona is another useful comparison from the Italian side. Innsbruck can fit a northern arrival, while Munich may be worth considering when its flight gives you a better overall journey.
Price the transfer before celebrating a cheap airfare. For a public-transport arrival, check your airport-to-station leg and then the rail gateway and valley-bus connection. A prearranged transfer may suit a group with ski bags, but obtain the final accommodation drop-off and waiting policy in writing.
Once in the valley, official winter mobility information describes buses, ski buses and lifts. That makes a car-free stay possible with the right accommodation; check your walk to the ski bus and lessons before choosing a room solely by price.
Alta Badia: the last valley connection matters
Give the transport operator your actual village and hotel. The tourist board lists several airport options, but that does not mean a convenient shared transfer runs after every flight. Confirm service dates, pickup location and whether the quote reaches your property or a central stop.
If travelling by train, Alta Badia identifies Brunico as its nearest railway gateway, with onward bus connections. Cortina Express also lists a seasonal Corvara/Colfosco connection in its timetable directory. Check the operating day and complete journey before treating Venice as your winning option. Avoid choosing an airport on a straight-line map while leaving the final valley leg unresolved.
Cortina: start with Venice, then check the coach
Our starting recommendation for Cortina is Venice Marco Polo: ATVO (line 29, booking required) and Cortina Express both name the airport as a stop on their Cortina routes; see also the airport’s own Dolomites transport page. Compare the current Cortina Express timetable with the available ATVO service. Open the timetable valid for your dates and verify the exact airport stop. A destination called Treviso in a route heading does not by itself confirm an airport pickup.
Work from scheduled landing through baggage reclaim to the coach departure, then check the walk or booked transfer from Cortina's arrival stop to your hotel. Compare where to stay in Cortina with that arrival in mind. For a late flight, confirm a private transfer or consider an airport-area night; include it in the holiday cost and night count.
On the return, choose the transfer around airline check-in and baggage deadlines, with room for traffic and winter disruption. Do not assume the first coach of the day works for an early flight.
Flying north of the Brenner? Check the Lueg Bridge
ASFINAG's Lueg Bridge project information describes construction on the A13, normal single-lane operation and temporary additional lanes on selected busy dates. Consult the current driving calendar and traffic information for both directions of your trip. The Val Gardena airport page specifically advises considering Italian airports because of these works.
This affects a road transfer or rental journey routed through the Brenner corridor; it is not a fixed delay you can add to every itinerary. Ask your driver about the planned route and collection time. Recheck for your travel year rather than applying an old calendar to a later winter.
Compare the full price and ski-bag handling
Write down one total for each airport: return flights, checked baggage, sports equipment, return transfers and any arrival or departure overnight. For a rental, add confirmed winter equipment, permitted cross-border travel, tolls and hotel parking. Use our winter rental checklist before committing.
Ask every transport provider how it handles your skis, snowboard, child seat and oversized bags. Airline acceptance does not settle the onward coach's conditions. For example, Cortina Express publishes separate luggage and sports-equipment rules; read the current allowance against what you will bring. If hiring equipment locally, confirm fitting hours so a late arrival does not disrupt the first lesson.
For two adults travelling light, changing between a train and bus may be an acceptable trade-off. With small children and several ski bags, the number of changes and the final walk deserve more weight. Compare the two journeys you would actually take: a daytime flight with an available transfer, and the cheaper evening flight with its realistic fallback. Count any extra room night and lost skiing time before deciding which is better value.
Book in an order that keeps the trip workable
- Choose the ski village and check accommodation near your intended lift, lessons or ski-bus stop.
- Compare two or three complete airport journeys, including the return.
- Confirm transfer dates, baggage, pickup and delayed-flight terms.
- Check cancellation deadlines across the room, flights and transfer before paying.
- Save booking references and recheck transport and road information shortly before departure.
For one hotel all week, compare our Dolomites base choices. If your trip is in summer and you prefer public transport, follow the seven-day Ortisei itinerary without a car.
Choose the right place to stay

Cortina d'Ampezzo
For a Cortina ski stay: check the property's connection to your arrival stop and ski transport. This search is for Cortina, not Val Gardena or Alta Badia.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best airport for Dolomites skiing?
There is no single winner for every resort. Compare Bolzano, Verona and Innsbruck for Val Gardena; check a village-specific transfer for Alta Badia; start with Venice Marco Polo and its dated coach connections for Cortina.
Is Innsbruck always better than Venice for a Dolomites ski holiday?
No. Your ski village, flight timing and complete transfer determine the better choice. Northern road transfers may use the Brenner corridor, where the current Lueg Bridge restrictions should be checked.
Can I reach a Dolomites ski resort without hiring a car?
Yes, with a suitable airport transfer or rail-and-bus connection and well-located accommodation. Check the exact winter service for your village, luggage and arrival time before booking flights.
Should I book the flight before the ski hotel?
Identify the village, suitable accommodation and a feasible return transfer together. Compare the full journey and cancellation terms before paying for any element that would be costly to change.
