Renting a Car in the Alps in Winter: What Is Actually Included

Confirm the winter equipment in the actual rental agreement before paying. The airport, car category and booking photograph do not confirm what will be fitted.

For a trip through Austria, the exact winter-tyre rule below matters even if you collect your car in Munich, Zurich or Italy.

For cars up to 3.5 tonnes, Austria requires qualifying winter tyres on all four wheels from 1 November to 15 April when driven in snow, slush or ice. It is a rule tied to road conditions. See the Austrian government’s current winter-tyre requirement.

The chain alternative is narrower than it sounds: chains must be fitted on at least two driven wheels, and the road must have a continuous or nearly continuous layer of snow or ice. A set carried in the boot is not this alternative.

The official rule recognises specified M+S markings or a snowflake symbol. Austria’s minimum winter tread is 4 mm for radial tyres and 5 mm for cross-ply tyres; the transport ministry explains the tread requirement. Ask the supplier to confirm compliance for every country you will enter, since national marking rules can differ.

For a normal journey mixing cleared motorways and snowy resort roads, our recommendation is confirmed winter tyres plus compatible chains where needed. Do not build the booking around summer tyres and chains alone.

ECC-Net recommends declaring cross-border plans when booking and reading the insurance and rental terms. Check which company actually supplies the vehicle when using a comparison site.

Switzerland has no national calendar-based winter-tyre mandate, but the car must still be suitable for the conditions. ASTRA recommends winter-ready tyres and explains the consequences of unsuitable equipment.

A cross-border permission letter does not waive a country’s road rules. Check each country and the actual road before travel. The country-by-country guide is a starting point for that check.

Choose the resort first, then compare the complete arrival. Price the required equipment and parking, check pickup closing time against the flight, and leave room for weather and traffic delays. Our recommendation for a late flight is an airport overnight when it avoids a tired mountain drive.
