June to September is ideal for road trips. All high mountain passes (Furka, Grimsel, Susten, Gotthard) are open, weather is reliable, and daylight hours are long. July and August are busiest. Late September offers quieter roads with autumn colour. Most passes close from November to May.
What driving rules should I know for Switzerland?
You need a motorway vignette (40 CHF per year) for any Autobahn use. Speed limits are strictly enforced: 120 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h outside towns, 50 km/h in towns. Headlights must be on at all times. Post buses have absolute right of way on mountain roads, and uphill traffic has priority on single-lane passes.
How much does a Switzerland road trip cost?
Budget roughly 180 to 350 CHF per person per day for mid-range travel. Hotels cost 120 to 250 CHF per night, sit-down meals 25 to 45 CHF, and the vignette is a one-time 40 CHF. Fuel is about 1.80 CHF per litre. Switzerland is significantly more expensive than Austria or Germany, but quality is consistently high.
How many days do I need for a Switzerland road trip?
Five days covers the Swiss lakes and one scenic pass. Seven days is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors, allowing Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zermatt without rushing. Ten days lets you add Andermatt, the Bernina region, or a French-Swiss detour. Three days works for a focused Interlaken-only trip.
